Hermes: A History
Thierry Hermes opened a harness shop in Paris in 1837. The brand Hermes was born. It provided equestrian gear for European nobles. Hermes introduced its first bag in 1900, the Haut a Courroies, designed to hold saddles. This marked the beginning of a new era. Hermes expanded its product line in the 1920s to include handbags and travel bags, as well as jewelry. Hermes launched the Sac a Depeches in 1935, which was later known as Kelly Bag. The Constance bag followed in 1959, and the Birkin in 1984. Hermes, true to its commitment to excellence, continues to make its leather goods in a traditional artisanal way.
